Internal Revenue Service

The mission of the Internal Revenue Service is to ensure effective assessment and optimum collection of taxes due to the state under the relevant laws and to promote voluntary compliance through tax education.

The main objective of the IRS is to collect the proper amount of tax revenue; serve the public by continually improving the quality of products and services and to ensure fairness, integrity and effective performance in a manner warranting the highest degree of public confidence.

The Service also administers the tax-related legislation. The IRS collects direct taxes imposed under the law by encouraging voluntary compliance and by deferring tax evasion and tax avoidance. It also maintains public confidence in the integrity of the tax system by administering tax due or its related legislation in a fair and professional manner.

The right of tax payers to expect that any information they supply will be held in confidence is one of the underlying principles of the Ghanaian direct tax system, and it is a right that is stringently guarded within the Service.
